This minimally invasive procedure involves implanting a small pulse generator and thin electrical leads near the dorsal root ganglia—clusters of sensory nerve cells located just outside the spinal cord that act as “gatekeepers” for pain signals. By delivering mild electrical pulses directly to these nerve clusters, DRG stimulation modulates overactive pain pathways, effectively “quieting” the signals before they reach the brain. It is especially effective for localized pain in the lower extremities, such as the foot, knee, groin, or hip, and is FDA-approved for conditions like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). The treatment begins with a trial phase, where temporary leads are placed to assess effectiveness. If successful, a permanent system is implanted under the skin.
