What Is Myofascial Pain?
Myofascial pain is a muscle pain condition linked to sensitive areas called trigger points. These tight, tender spots can cause pain directly in the affected muscle or send discomfort to another area, known as referred pain. You may also notice muscle stiffness, aching, or discomfort that makes certain movements harder.
What Does a Myofascial Trigger Point Feel Like?
Seven signs can help you recognize myofascial trigger points:
- A tender knot:Â You may notice a small, sore knot or tight spot within a muscle.
- Deep aching pain:Â The discomfort can feel dull, persistent, or as though it sits deep inside the muscle.
- Pain when you press the spot:Â Pressing a trigger point can reproduce familiar pain.
- Pain somewhere else:Â A trigger point can cause referred pain, meaning you feel discomfort away from the actual source.
- Muscle tightness or stiffness:Â The affected area may feel tense, especially after repetitive activity or prolonged stillness.
- Limited movement:Â Tight, painful muscles can make certain movements harder or less comfortable.
- Pain that sticks around:Â Unlike everyday muscle soreness, myofascial pain may persist or worsen instead of settling with rest or basic self-care.
When Should You Have Muscle Pain Checked?
Consider having your muscle pain evaluated when you notice:
- Pain that persists or keeps returning
- Recurring muscle knots that remain tender or sore
- Pain that limits movement or makes daily activities uncomfortable
- Discomfort that disrupts sleep
- Muscle pain that doesn’t improve with rest or basic self-care
